As a result of the high market value and commercial interest for jollytail (Galaxias maculatus) this fish has been described as a potential new species for Chilean aquaculture diversification. Nowadays the breeding technology for G. maculatus is stillin experimental phase. There are many persistent issues that need to be solved during the culture cycle for this species, such as premature pigmentation and early change of the ideal morphometric proportions (Dantagnan et al 2002). Recent studies have indicated that arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) is an important precursor in metabolic events of different fish larvae and that is involved in the pigmentation of marine fish larvae (Bell, et al., 2003; Villalta et al., 2005; Avella et al., 2007; Lund et al., 2007). The present study aims to determine the effect of arachidonic acid on pigmentation, productive parameters and body condition index of G. maculatus.
