One strategy to increase survival rates in the larval stages of fish in fish farming, and at the same time avoiding the use of antibiotics, is the use of immunostimulants. One class of immunostimulants consist of beta-(l->3)-glucans. The storage polysaccharides of marine diatoms are beta-(l->3),(l->6) glucans called chrysolaminarans which have structural similarities with known beta-(l->3),(l->6)-glucan immunostimulants(St0rseth et al. 2004). A study was performed of the chrysolaminaran isolated fromthe diatom ,Chaetoceros mulleri. The chrysolaminaran was used in first feeding experiments with cod larvae (Gadus morhud) to monitor the effect on the survival rate and growth in comparison to commercially available yeast beta-(l->3),(l->6)-glucan and high-M-alginate immunostimulants.
