The morphological features and the functionality properties of the mollusc hemocytes during the phagocytosis process have been widely investigated by several approaches and the negative impact of the stress on the phagocytosis has been demonstrated both in terms of decreased hemocyte spreading or locomotion ability and in terms of reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis (Hine, 1999; Lacoste et al., 2002). The present study aim of investigating the morphological modulation and the ROS synthesis in the mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) hemocytes following stress treatments and phagocytosis stimuli, using different methods as well as the cell viability analysis (CVA), the flow cytometry, the fluorometry and the confocal laser scanning microscopy.
