Plain X-ray films have traditionally been the mainstay in imaging of ENT disease for centuries. They are cheap, easy to do and offer a superb spatial resolution. However, they are fraught with a poor sensitivity and specificity and they are degraded by manifold superpositions. Therefore, they are largely replaced by cross-sectional methods like computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Invasive imaging techniques like digital subtraction angiography (DSA) are occasionally done for diagnostic purposes, but mostly in terms of therapeutic interventional endovascular procedures.
