The paper describes measures for addressing selective catalytic reduction (SCR) problems due to ammonia slip in company with flue-gas SO{sub}3. With emphasis on long-term, commercial service to date in western Europe, details are presented of German electric-utility operators' SCR experience in instances of plants with high-sulfur bituminous fuel firing. This duty is unique to independent power producers, IPPs, such as Steag AG, Essen, Germany, owned by major German coal companies with high-volume outputs of coal cleaning waste (middlings). These utility boiler owners operate SCR systems in conjunction with firing of coal yielding high flue-gas SO{sub}2 concentration. Their view of key system design requirements for operating success in the U.S. in the many challenging, high-sulfur, applications is detailed.
