A Unique Educational Program to Promote Science and Technology - The Nitzana Solar Park

The "Science and Sun Program" is a new educational initiative at the Nitzana educational community, NW Negev desert, Israel. The program offers an unusual scientific experience within a desert research environment to promote science education in remote regions. The link between this initiative and the Solar Energy Park, to be constructed in Nitzana, is the sun. Apart from the sun's centrality to the living world, it is also a potential source of clean energy for all of man's needs in a modern society. Replacing organic fuels with solar energy has clear environmental advantages. The main purpose of our scientific program and the Solar Park is primarily to educate youth on the multiple roles the sun plays in everyday life. The physical principles of light and heat are explained, and students are given the opportunity to experiment with solar energy, including operating small engines, cooking, etc. Moreover, the contribution of science and technology to everyday life through preservation of the environment is emphasized. The second purpose of our program is to develop programs and subject matter for students to learn science as applied to a desert environment. Nitzana is an ideal location to achieve the two purposes stated above.
