This paper reviews the methods for performing secondary side regulation (SSR). Traditional methods are investigated including transformer coupling, secondary regulators, coupled inductors, and magnetic amplifiers. The work then progresses to cover some of the newer control methods for secondary regulation including analog IC and DSP based control methods. The work is applicable to isolated converters in both AC to DC and DC to DC applications. An emphasis is placed on the 48V input, DC to DC converter for telecom applications. The target audience includes the engineering community from novices to experienced power supply designers.
