We investigated the preparation of highly mesoporous and high surface area activated carbons with narrow pore size distribution using vinylidene chloride/methyl acrylate copolymers [Poly(VDC/MA)]. The preparation method is very simple, I.e., mixing of Poly(VDC/MA) with Y(acac)3 and carbonization followed by steam activation. The resulting activated carbons possess high BET specific surface area (2000 m2/g) and high mesopore surface area (1300 m2/g). We measured the electric double layer capacitance of the obtained mesoporous activated carbons in tetraalkylammonium tetrafluoroborate/propylene carbonate solution. The discharge capacitance of the mesoporous activated carbons was maintained at a high discharge current density.
