In this paper static and dynamic loading of Charpy V-notched and pre-cracked specimens was simulated by FEM analysis using elastic-plastic material equation of a cast ferritic steel. The results of 2D plane strain, plane stress and 3D modelling are presented and discussed here. Different impact velocities were applied in the calculations. Contact situation was considered between the hammer and the specimen, as well as between the specimen and the anvils. The calculation results were analysed and compared with experimental load-deflection curves. In the case of dynamic loading not only the calculated load-deflection curve, but also the magnitude of the inertia peak, the load oscillations, as well as the loss of contact effect showed good agreement with the experimental results. The possibility for predicting the dynamic fracture toughness values on the basis of the FEM results is also discussed.
