Some historical aspects and the development of the Charpy test in Russia

Historical background. development and possible application of the impact test in Russia are presented. Special attention is paid to loading conditions, notch and specimen configuration and sizes, impact test machines and test facilities, elastic energy accumulated in the system "test machine specimen", test methodology and interpretation of the results on the Charpy impact energy, the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature and fracture surface. Possible application of the Charpy test based on the shift of the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature due to damage has been presented for the evaluation of mechanical properties degradation and structural integrity assessment. The procedure is illustrated for nuclear pressurised water reactor.
