The objective of this study was to elucidate mechanisms of increased osteoblast adhesion on hydroxyapatite (HA; Caio(P04)eOH2) composite coatings. Previous results showed increased osteoblast adhesion on HA coatings after hydrothemial treatment. In these studies, titanium was coated with HA, TiO_2, and Poly (dl-lactic-glycolic acid) (PLGA) using sol-gel processing. The HA particles synthesized were composed of agglomerated nano-sized crystallites. Surface features of the HA/TiO_2/PLGA composite coating possessed sizes in the micrometer and nanometer regime. The present study revealed increased surface area/roughness for the coatings after hydrothermal treatment, which may be a contributing factor to the previously observed enhanced osteoblast adhesion.
