An Empirical Assessment of Distributed Object Architectures

Applications in modern enterprise systems are increasingly becoming more complex and distributed, typically running on different computers, on different operating systems and using different software tools, and are interconnected by different networks. Yet amidst all this heterogeneity, there exists a need for objects to communicate with each other. Thus, there exists a need for integrating different components efficiently and reliably in a distributed heterogeneous environment. In such an environment, there is a growing need for middleware technology for building distributed applications infrastructure and taking care of managing the communication between the distributed objects by providing an abstraction. This paper evaluates the performance of various middleware products with emphasis on commercially available Common Object Request Broker (CORBA) platforms. Three middleware technologies are considered: Sun's Java RMI, Sun's Java IDL CORBA product, and the Visibroker CORBA product. It also compares these products qualitatively and quantitatively by developing and deploying similar application on them.
