Non-intrusive measurements of displacement fields under a footing were performed in a layered model. Natural soils were modeled by using transparent synthetic materials made of silica gel and silica powder. Laser light sheets were used to slice the soil models. The interaction between the laser light and transparent soil particles produces a speckle pattern, which was captured with a digital camera. Digital image correlation of consecutive images before and after loading was used to construct the deformation field. The technology presented in this paper provides an economical method to study spatial deformations non-intrusively.
