This paper discusses the implementation of an inspection strategy utilizing a statistical modeling-based AOI approach at a fast-growing telecommunications manufacturer, and the improvements achieved by this organization as a result. We investigate not only the formation of the inspection strategy, but also the search for and evaluation of potential vendors, and explore organizational issues that arose during implementation in a volume SMT production environment with complex assemblies. Presented here are some of the specific results obtained by this manufacturer, which can be directly attributed to the introduction of AOI. These results include improved clarity as to the nature of the manufacturing defects occurring, a subsequent reduction in defect rates, increased yields and reductions in board assembly costs.
