Motorcycling and congestion: quantification of behaviors

It has been suggested that increased use of motorcycles could result in lower congestion, reduced fuel consumption and thus lower emission of pollutants. DTLR wished to explore this proposition and commissioned a study. This paper reports on part of that study in which a set of previously defined behaviours of TWMVs (two wheel motor vehicles) are quantified in congested conditions. This work was funded by DTLR as part of a larger study into TWMVs and congestion. TWMV users appear to make use of strategies to reduce delay which appear not to impede other traffic. Up to 90% of TWMVs were observed to filter in traffic. The views expressed in this paper are those of the author alone.
