Topography of contact interface is one of the most important factors that determine not only the tribological but also the dynamics behavior of a contact. For example, contact topography is strongly related to generation of self-excited vibration in a disc brake system. Surface roughness has also been found to play a major role in generation of frictional sound in rubbing contact. Control of contact topography is therefore important for controlling the dynamic behavior of a contact.
