The invention relates to the methods for evaluating the characteristicproperties of at least one of two contacting mediasuch as a subsurface formation surrounding a borehole and the borehole, andthe system for evaluating the properties. The methodis based on mixed surface waveforms measurement and analysis. The method forevaluating characteristic properties comprisesregistering acoustic signals generated by passage of acoustic waves in saidmedia and determining one or more wave characteristics ofmixed surface waves propagating along said interface based on the registeredacoustic signals. The characteristic properties of atleast one of said media and said interface are calculated on the basis ofdetermined wave characteristics of mixed surface waves.
