Currents topics facing the materials community are the construction of thinner (eventually on molecular scale) films and devices. The possibility of using different materials and different deposition techniques may result in interesting, novel physical phenomena. There is a high interest in the so-called organic-inorganic hybrid materials. Fine tuning of optical/electronic properties is achievable in such chemical systems. For example, sol-gel materials can be incorporated within a thin film architecture wherein the two different organic-inorganic properties complement each other.
