Rice is staple food in Japan. Paddy field is surrounded by levees and average area is 0.3ha in area. The effect of precision agriculture in Japan was doubted. Kyoto University precision agriculture research group has been studied since 1996. The experimental results show that the effect of spatial variability cannot be neglected and remote sensing using machine vision is useful to measure nitrogen content of rice. In 2000 the effect of variable rate fertilizer application was tested. The experiment suggests that variable rate application is effective to reduce nitrogenous fertilizer. Cause and effect, however, is complex. Precision agriculture research has been continued.
