The paper presents the findings of a research project conducted to asses the impacts of modern agricultural biotechnologies on the livelihoods of poor farmers in Sri Lanka. The conceptual framework within which the information was generated, interpreted and analysed was the sustainable livelihoods framework. Community level studies were focused on analysing the vulnerability context of small holder farmers to shocks, trends and seasonally as a result of the influence of outside structures and processes operating unfavourably on the poor farmers and identify and analyse the circumstances that influenced farmers to adopt new technologies. Findings of the study emphasises the need to analyse and be responsive to wider socio-economic context in generaland the vulnerability context hi particular of small scale farmers hi identifying suitable technological interventions to improve the productivity and livelihoods of small holder agricultural practises in a sustainable manner.
