Electronic structure: from bonding to mechanical properties

We review the principal techniques used to describe the electronic structure of bulk materials and of their defects, the tight-binding approximation and the moment technique being described in some detail. Particular interest is paid to elastic properties and dislocations, as well as to #gamma#-surfaces and core structures.
