THE APPLICATION OF DIGITAL CHART DATA IN VESSEL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT AND VESSEL NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

The inherent functionality and advantages of digital cartography when implemented in various types of navigation surveillance systems has been recognised by manufacturers and navigators for many years. The marine industry is fortunate that international organisations such as the International Hydrographic Organisation and International Maritime Organisation have in the interests of safety of navigation at sea, understood the advantages of electronic charting systems and the need to set appropriate industrial standards. The implementation of digital charts in navigation systems has greatly enhanced their functionality. The advantages of using a common reference in the form of an identical chart database in for example, vessel traffic management systems and navigation systems have been widely recognised by navigators, port authorities and vessel owners. Digital cartography is a valuable reference in the form of background information that enhances system functionality. This paper focuses on the availability and application of digital cartography in a number of systems.
