Laser ablation is an increasingly popular method in growth of thin films, and starts to prepare nano-phase materials. Studies of the phenomena of a plume occurring during pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in the presence of a buffer gas are fundamental for giving deeper understanding of the processes involved and for developing an efficient diagnostic tool. The presence of a buffer gas leads to major effects in dynamics and composition of the plume. In the present study, using laser absorption spectroscopy [1, 2], the spatial and temporal density distributions of C(3{sup}1P{sub}1{sup}0) excited species in a plume were measured in vacuum and in Ar, O{sub}2 and He buffer gases. The broadening of the absorption line was also examined.
