A new coolant pump concept has been developed for better fuel economy. The flow returning from the radiator is fed coaxially into the pump. The by-pass flow is fed tangentially into the pump, generating a pre-swirl with the same direction ofrotation as the coolant pump impeller. The relative velocity between the flow and the impeller decreases. This reduces the transferred momentum from the impeller to the fluid, reducing the power consumption. The flow split between the radiator and theby-pass channel is controlled by the ordinary thermostat. Results from analysis and measurements are presented.
