The heating system uses the coolant system for the engine and has a fuel fired heater (11) to boost the temperature, especially during engine warm-up periods. To prevent formation of vapour bubbles in the coolant, through rapid temperature rise in the fuel fired heater, the rate of temperature rise is monitored. A processor (18) regulates the speed of the coolant pump (10) to provide sufficient flow to prevent vapour formation. The vapour protection operates up to a set temperature, e.g. 70 deg.C for water coolant system, above which the coolant is effectively degassed. The pump speed is regulated electronically. ADVANTAGE - Simple protection for heater boosters, simple to fit to existing systems.
