The reduction of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions is one of the main concerns of today’s engine development. The introduction of the latest generation of fuel efficient diesel and gasoline engines create a significant heat deficit and therefore less comfort and safety for driver and passengers, especially while driving in the city or at idle. Tighter emission standard regulations and the tendency of several states towards “Zero Emission Vehicles” will also increase and push the popularity of electric- hybrid- and fuel cell vehicles. These vehicles have usually no source at all to provide heat for the passenger compartment, batteries (especially Nickel-Metal Hydride Batteries), or the fuel cells, and therefore cause a demand for heat, even with higher power ratings.
