We examine the performance of a simple finite capacity production planning algorithm in a production system with a single bottleneck station and reentrant product flows. The algorithm considers capacity only for the bottleneck station, and models other stations as a random delay. We examine the effects of machine breakdowns, variation in processing times at non-bottleneck stations and system utilization on the performance of the proposed planning procedures using a simulation model. Our results indicate that use of replanning maintains throughput levels while improving cycle time and predictability, and that undercapacity scheduling yields further improvements in predictability.
