The evolution of the power markets is dramatically changing the structure of the electricity value chain. Utilities, IPPs and equipment manufacturers are facing new challenges and new risks. The paper presents Ansaldo Energia's Global Service vision on how to create customer value, and provides enlighten examples of enablers which have been developed for such goal. Long-term business relationships can thrive during the commercial operation of the plant, if the service provider is driven by the user's same goal, i.e. managing and optimizing the energy assets. The world of large-series shelf products, running-to-failure and being replaced by a sound "spare part" is gone forever, and will leave very few regrets: as a matter of fact, very costly components in power plants and/or complex systems where short and/or long operation interruptions may cause dramatic losses cannot simply follow a run-to-failure approach.
