With the actual electrification hype the future of the ICE is increasingly questioned especially in Europe. Besides a strong political push towards a CO_2 neutral transport sector, also significant improvements of air quality are requested. In this context, the severity of the future EU7 legislation might even exceed SULEV20 requirements especially due to the aggravated RDE boundaries. Combined with demanding CO_2 limits, this is a huge push for Electrification. Nevertheless, in a comprehensive view based on lifetime CO_2, the ICE will remain competitive for the next decades. For cost effective solutions this requires a new generation of ICE's that utilizes all synergies with Hybridization in best way. To cover the diversified market demands, a modular ICE family that can be adapted to the various levels of Hybridization is required - named ICE 4.X. Incorporating predictive ICE operation strategies and furthermore refined exhaust gas aftertreatment will enable "Zero Impact Emission" levels which will be required for a long-term future of the ICE.
