Effect of mental models formed from experiences of usual system muse on drivers' decision making to operate their vehicles substituting for driving support systems

Most of driving support systems now, which purpose is to reduce driver's operating task, have conditions where systems are not able to deal with safely. At the conditions, drivers must operate their vehicles substituting for the systems. A driving simulator experiment was conducted in order to examine what were related with driver's decision making for intervention. As an example of driving support systems, a low speed following system was chosen. The results show that this kind of driver's operation is affected not only by driver's decision making based on situation awareness but also by mental models formed from driver's experiences.
