ARE SUGAR SNAP PEAS AND SPECIALTY SNAP BEANS POTENTIAL CROPS FORNY?

Snap pea trials. Seven sugar snap pea varieties were evaluated in a trial at NYCRF in Batavia, NY. Cascadia, Sugar Sprint, 08590485, and Sugar Daddy were planted on 3 May; and Cascadia, Sugar Daddy, Sugar Sprint, Sugar Prince, SP496-1-2-3, and SP496-2-2 were planted on 17 May. Prolonged wet weather delayed intended planting by several weeks. Large, unreplicated plots (5 x 50 ft. on first planting date; 5 x 100 ft. on second planting date) were planted with a disk drill into soil to which 300 lbs. of5-23-23 liquid fertilizer had been applied and lightly incorporated on 27 April. Weeds were controlled using post-emergence applications of Basagran, Thistrol and Poast. No fungicides or insecticides were applied. Peas received ample water through rainfall throughout the season. Harvest samples were taken from 3.5x8 foot areas when peas were judged to be mature. Pea pods were evaluated for yield, pod size, and blemishes.
