Millimeter-wave antenna designs has been the focus of much research in recent years. The shorter wavelengths at these frequencies will undoubtedly allow many designs to be physically smaller and compact. In addition, expensive RF hardware will be required for proper measurement. Consequently, current antenna chambers and ranges, originally designed for larger size, lower frequency antennas, will be unsuitable for efficient characterization. Modification of existing ranges for high frequencies may prove to be very difficult and expensive as large positional and RF equipment is not easily modified or replaced. With such difficulties, a custom antenna range, designed for the smaller size antennas and for lower cost is an attractive solution. In this paper, we introduce such a design: A novel portable and inexpensive millimeter-wave measurement system. The complete system development, from the positional scanner design and implementation, the custom measurement system software, the post-processing options including phase-less measurements, and the first standard gain horn measurement, will be presented in this paper.
