Report of the working group on northern bohemia

The overall purpose of this chapter is to provide information that will be helpful in the design and implementation of a biomarker-based program that is applicable to environmental problems associated with pollution in Northern Bohemia of the Czech Republic. As participants in the preparation of this chapter, it was our task to sort through existing knowledge on biomarkers and pollution (especially as found in the study area) and condense it in such a fashion that information relevant to the topic of this boook would be presented in a clear, concise and readily understandable manner. This task was accomplished by arranging the material in the following manner. First, an attempt was made to describe the Northern Bohemian region. Emphasis was placed on those physical features that identify the region and particular attention was given to environmental problems that have arisen as a result of pollution, as well as other factors that have contributed to the problem. Current activities were identified that are a direct result of the problem, such as environmentla legislation, corrective or preventive measures, monitoring programs and studies on health issues. Second, information was prepared on the implementation of a biomarker program that describes several classes of biomarkers appropriate to the types of pollutants that exist in the environment in the Northern Bohemian region. Because of the complexity of the problem of environmental pollution in this region (i.e., extent and types of toxic substances), an integrated approach was emphasized. To be effective, biomarker data must be integrated with results from field studies, bioassays and chemical analysis. Pertinent recommendations are detailed that must be addressed. Finally, sveral important documents, that were either presented or discussed at the meeting of this NATO Advanced Research Workshop and are relevant to this study area, are included as Appendixes to this chapter.
