Cone Angles for Effervescent Atomizers Spraying into High Ambient Pressure Environments

Cone angle data are presented for sprays formed using effervescent atomizers with injection pressures in the MPa range. The goal of this study was to determine cone angle characteristics in high ambient pressure environments. The test matrix encompassed atomizing gas-to-liquid ratios by mass (GLRs) shown by previous studies to produce optimum performance (minimum drop size), i.e. 0.008 < GLR < 0.136, and injection pressures ranging from 12.2 to 38.8 MPa. Ambient pressures ranged from 0.27 to 5.5 MPa (gage). The data show that cone angle increases with increasing injection pressure, and also with increasing GLR. A more interesting result is that the cone angle is first constant (or decreases slightly) when the ambient pressure increases from 0.27 to 1.5 MPa (gage), but then increases as ambient pressure increases from 1.5 to 5.5 MPa (gage). Regardless of operating conditions and ambient pressure, spray cone angles (reported here as half-angles) always lie between 5.8 and 11.5 degrees.
