Influence of Ti_3SiC_2 content on mechanical properties of Cr_3C_2-Ni based cermet

For improving the mechanical properties of Cr_3C_2-Ni cermet, especially for the transverse rupture strength, a flexible ceramic Ti3SiC2 was selected as an additive agent to prepare a new kind of Cr_3C_2-Ni-Ti3SiC2 cermet through traditional pressureless sintering, and the influence of Ti3SiC2 content on the cermet was investigated. The results show that the crystal grain growth during sintering was inhibited after adding Ti3SiC2, thus the hardness and the transverse rupture strength of the cermet was obviously improved. When the Ti3SiC2 content was 5wt%, the hardness of the cermet was the highest 88.26HRA, and its transverse rupture strength was reached to 764MPa, which increased 10.7% compared with the cermet without it. With metallographic analysis, the possible reinforcement mechanisms were proposed for its strengthening.
