A comparison of the microstructure, hardness, fracture toughness, crystal lattice parameter, residual stress, performance and some other properties of titanium nitride coatings deposited using either filtered or conventional steered arc-evaporation techniques is given. The TiN coatings produced by filtered arc-evaporation are found to have a nano-grained structure, be highly uniform, smooth and droplet-phase-free. This is thought to lead to obtaining higher values of hardness and fracture toughness compared with conventionally deposited TiN coatings. The nano-grained TiN coatings obtained by filtered arc-evaporation are found to have improved performance in wear applications for cemented carbide and HSS cutting tools, and in sliding applications for components of piston pumps.
