New Engineered Solutions for Upgrading Existing Degassing Systems at Intaico Aluminum Corporation, an Alumax Company

Intaico Aluminum Corporation, an Alumax Company in Ferndale, Washington, USA, commissioned a work team to improve the performance of its installed degassing systems. The objectives were to: 1) minimize the operating costs associated with the degassing systems' injectors, 2) reduce maintenance costs, 3) enhance features for the operating and cleaning practices and 4) minimize investment costs associated with making these improvements. Working in conjunction with Pyrotek, Incorporated, and Pechiney Aluminium Engineering, the Intaico team designed and implemented a new lid and injector system that achieved these objectives. Features of the new design include the use of an ALPUR-style injector system, a simplified inert gas injection panel, and lid improvements for vessel access. Actual cost reductions will provide pay back for the redesign investment within 2.5 years, while helping Intaico with its ongoing effort to reduce the cost per treated ton of aluminum.
