A simulation study aimed at providing a long-term quantification of the potential of nitrogen leaching from a typical irrigeted crop rotation in the quincypasco area of washington was conducted. Cropsyst,a cropping systems simulation model, was used to perform the simulations. Interactions between soils, crops,weather, and irrigated. A center pivot-irrigated three-year crop rotation including potatoes, winter wheat and maize was simulated. Potatoes appeared as the principal contributor to N leaching when fertilization rates were high. When fertilization rates approached new guidelines calling for lower fertilization levels, N leaching from potatoes was low and not different from that of other crops in the rotation.
