Maxillectomy and mandibulectomy are indicated for surgical excision of malignant oral tumors and benign tumors that involve the bone and/or periosteum, such as the epulides and ameloblastoma. Tumors located unilaterally or bilaterally on the premaxilla or unilaterally on the maxilla or the hard palate may be excised if sufficient normal labial mucosa and hard palate remain to allow closure of the oronasal defect. Partial mandibulectomy is limited by the medical and caudal extent of the tumor. Rostrally located tumors with bilateral mandibular involvement can be excised, however, more caudally located tumors that are very invasive into the sublingual musculature or pharynx may not be resectable.
