Bovine spongiform encephalopathy: a british perspective

First reported in 1986, BSE has been one of the greatest issues ever to strike the British cattle industry, although it has been the politics surrounding the disease, rather than the disease itself, which has caused such massive economic losses. At the time of writing (1997) all beef exports from the UK continue to be banned by the EU and the future remains politically uncertain. However, all the available evidence suggests that this epidemic will have virtually died out soon after the year 2001.
