A method for typing a sample of a prion or spongiform encephalopathy disease. The method comprises the comparison of glycoform ratios of the sample with a standard sample of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or Creutzfeldt-Jacobs disease (CJD). The method additionally comprises comparing protease resistance of the sample with a standard sample of BSE or CJD. The method can be used for the diagnosis of an infection of an animal with BSE and for assessing and/or predicting the susceptibility of an animal to BSE. Also disclosed is a kit for typing a prion or spongiform encephalopathy disease sample or diagnosing the susceptibility of an animal to BSE. Medicaments for use in the prevention or treatment of a prion disease are also disclosed.
