Dietary manipulations are a major part of management of chronic renal failure in dogs and cats. Efforts are made to adjust intake of certain nutrients to accommodate the reduction in renal functions, and to alter the rate of progressive loss of residual renal function. Historically, the recommendations made for dietary management of renal failure in dogs and cats have been based on extrapolations from other species. As studies on dogs cats have been conducted, a changes in feeding recommendations for dogs and cats with chronic renal failure has emerged.
