In-cylinder methods for reducing the NOx and smoke emissions in diesel engines are discussed in this paper. At first, a brief survery is given regarding in-cylinder methods for reducing the NOx and smoke emissions by retarded injection timing, combustion chamber geometry, exhaust gas recirculation, turbocharing, intake air cooling, high pressure injection, injection rate control and multiple injection. Then, a comprehensive re-examination of the combustion process parameters for reducing the NOx and smokle emissions was performed using a phenomenological spray cobustion model of a D.I. iesel engine. In the calculative investigation, the calculations were made of an engine with a bore of 135mm and a stroke of 130mm, and the combustion proc4ess parameters were optimized as much as possible. As a result of these calculations, an approach for a low NOx and smoke emission engine was found.
