The inlet swirl intensity is optimized on a single cyclinder SI engine with a new type squish jet-turbulence combustion chamber. The results sow that the new chamber is not sensitive to the variation of inlet swirl ratio under wide range of operating consitions. As the swirl ratio varies from omega=0.4 to omega-1.6, the variation ratio of the specific fuel consumption is not more than 3
