Traceability to National and International Standards for EMC Conformance Testing.

The measurement of product emission and immunity levels with adequate precision, to meet the requirements of the EC EMC Directive, is a large and significant cost in the development of new products. The calibration of measurement tools such as antennas, field probes and open-site ranges will be discussed in some detail, identifying potential sources of significant errors. Some emission standards require the testing to be made in undamped screened rooms and the problems caused by this requirement will be discussed and possible solutions identified. In order for there to be free trade we must encourage countries to accept test reports made in the country of product manufacture; already within the European cooperation for Accreditation of Laboratories (EAL) there are mutual recognition agreements, but more needs to be achieved. Mutual recognition is more readily achieved when there have been international comparisons of measurement standards; details will be presented of recent comparisons.
