IMPACT OF COMPUTERIZATION IN A TESTING ENVIRONMENT

The National Test House, a premier scientific institution engaged in testing, evaluation, quality assurance and standardisation of materials and finished products, provides comprehensive test facilities under one roof in different engineering disciplines. In the context of global trade and the ISO 9000 series of standards, a COMPUTERIZED MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM comprising six modules viz., a SAMPLE MONITORING MODULE, an EQUIPMENT PROCUREMENT MODULE, a BUDGET MONITORING MODULE, a PERSONNEL INFORMATION MODULE, a LIBRARY INFORMATION MODULE and a STORES INFORMATION MODULE has been implemented via an EISA 486 MACHINE with 32 MB RAM, 600 MB HDD, 22 TERMINALS with intelligent terminal controllers, line drivers and many other associated peripherals. A UNIX Operating System has been used to serve the multiuser requirements along with an ORACLE RDBMS. Consequent to the system becoming operational, the quality system of the NTH has undergone a sea-change for the better.
