The Metrology community is constantly looking for entry level metrology technicians. Calibration labs around the country often use in-house metrologists to train new people on the job. Although the procedure may be effective, it is very costly to the company. Obviously, hiring trained individuals reduces the training costs. One technical college in Minnesota is now training metrology technicians using individualized instructions. This system uses expert supervision in a "hands-on" laboratory to enhance student learning. Basic theory plus hands-on training on electronic test equipment, dimensional measuring instruments, and physical measuring devices, provides a well rounded education for students entering the field of metrology. Metrology curriculum has been blocked off into stand alone courses allowing students to major in electronics and/or the physical/dimensional areas. The industrial community also benefits from the modular study curriculum. Because courses are broken into specific interest areas, they often serve as stand alone blocks to provide continuing education courses for industry. Customized training for metrology personnel is easily constructed in customer specified areas such as oscilloscopes, temperature measurement, statistical process control, measurement overview, voltmeter calibration, micrometers, etc. This paper summarizes the methods used and the results of personalized instruction at the Hutchinson Technical College, Hutchinson, MN.
