We report fully packaged photonic integrated devices with fiber pigtails, a dual-channel-spacing phased-array waveguide grating (PAWG) multi/demultiplexer (MUX/DMUX) and an 8-channel wavelength-selective 2×2 WDM cross-connect switch (WDM-OXC), as basic building blocks for WDM optical communication/networking systems. The optical fibers are attached to these devices by butt-coupling single-mode fiber ribbons in glass v-groove blocks. Efficient alignment is achieved using picomotor based precisionpositioning stages and the utilization of a wide-band white light. The excess loss for most of the I/O channels after fiber attachment is within 1.3 dB with an uniformity better than 0.5 dB, dependent on the alignment and connector quality. A 20 dBswitching ratio is obtained for the properly EO packaged WDM cross-connect switch using single stage thermal optical switches. This device is controlled by a custom-made current-driving circuit board designed with a TTL interface.
