There have been several papers over the years which have addressed this subject. It is not intended to repeat this material, but to expand upon it, and review some of the later developments. The concept of a central brake unit controlled by pilot signals from each cab goes back to the late 1960's, early 1970's. The first electronically controlled indirect automatic air brake utilising the central brake unit with electrical control signals from the cab was the E70 equipment fitted to the British Rail (B.R.) High Speed Trains (HST/IC 125) and the Class 56 freight locomotives (fig. 1). This was utilised in the Union internationale de chemins de fer `UIC' graduated release environment.
