Designing functionalised nano(hydro-)gels with specific properties is a challenging task by the fact that both the total number of functional groups and their distribution within the nanogel play a crucial role in controlling their properties. In addition the distribution and accessibility of functional groups are critical in determining the types of applications, for example nanogels designed for conjugation should contain functional groups at or near the nanogel surface, accessible for chemical reactions. On contrary, nanogels targeted for drug delivery applications should contain internal functional groups whose access is diffusion controlled.
